Welcome to FTE. Do you have a check engine light now that it's running again? As mentioned earlier, did you ever get the CPS recall done? Did it give any kind of indication before it died? Did any of the dash lights flash or come on before it died?
I'd start with the CPS if it were me. Either a free recall or a $30 part (less if you buy it from one of our dealer sponsors). Just don't get one from the auto parts store. It needs to be a Ford brand. Too many problems with the aftermarket stuff. Put your old CPS in a ziploc bag and hold on to it as a spare if that's not the problem this time.
The CPS (Camshaft Position Sensor) is one of the weakest links on the Ford 7.3 Powerstroke engines. The sensor has a high failure rate and common symptoms include having the engine die while driving as if you turned the key off just to have the driver pull over and restart without any problems; periodic 'hiccupping' of the engine; complete failure of the CPS can kill the engine and will not let it restart.
Go to the link that Chris posted on Guzzles site. There is a ton of info for you there.
Had the problem mostly when just starting out after about a mile and the truck died while still moving. Give it a 4 second count and turn the key and started right up but without almost going off the road with no power steering, o man. CPS
I installed a new CPS today. I hope it was the problem. I may be towing my 5th wheel along with my irreplaceables out of town soon (Paradise Ca) and I hope I do not come up short. Seems to pur like a tomcat in the driveway.
I am hoping for the best. Thanks for your help out there.
