fender bolts

ok guy's i know it may sound stupid as i know what the answer is but before i assume ..... what the hades or how the hades does the bolts for the rear fenders come out ??? they appear to be pressed in and i had a couple just snap off despite my best efforts . i've tried hittin' 'em and many other things no luck so i'm hoping one of you my fellow ford aholics will tell me before i get violent and screw something up .

Kevin - they are spot-welded in three places around the inside circle. Someone recommended taking an air chisel, and chiseling at the side of the round "head" on the inside. I did that, and it worked GREAT!! Had them all off in about 5 minutes, no damage whatsoever. It just breaks the spot welds. I had tried to drill, etc, but the air chisel is the cat's meow!

Don't hit them - you'll just dent the bed side. And drilling still leaves the spot welded "head", will just look like a washer.

Those fender bolts sticking out from the bed wall are spotwelded in place. That's why they won't knock out.

Some on here have had good luck drilling them out from the inside (5/16 drill), then grinding or knocking off the flat head on the inside. Most then use a polished button head bolts in their place. Looks nice.

If you look at them they have spot welds in certain places. I hit all mine with a cold chissel just right and it knocks them out. Its a BITCH and loud. If you knock a few out every couple of days it wont seem so bad.
My previous owner cut the nuts off with a torch and trashed all but one of mine.

Fender to bed bolts.

Someone mentioned last winter to use a large rachet and turn it clockwise to pop the nuts off. I had them all popped in about 30 minutes on each fender, so I could remove the fenders for storage. I have a old air rivit gun with several sets including a chisel. I knocked a few off, but never finished removing all of them until I work on the bed. chuck

If you want to remove the fenders without breaking the fender bolts, try something like this to remove the nuts.
Nut Splitter Tools — 2-Pc. Set | Tool Sets | Northern Tool + Equipment
I wasn't even sure if they were still available, haven't seen one in a while.

Those bolts are hard. You will want to just hit the welds. Once you get started theres a trick to it. You need to get under the side then they will start popping the welds. If your hitting and just cutting the bolt head it will take forever.

I removed mine a while back and replaced them with stainless carriage bolts. Even though there are several posts before on this same project (did you do a search first?) I use a 4" hand grinder and ground the head off in the bed. Then the screw just fell out. You have to use caution and grind a little at a time because it will get really hot and warp the metal, or ruin a good paint job. I took the head of the bolt down to just the metal even with the bed wall. Then take a small punch and tap the bolt out. It takes some time and work, but they come out pretty easy. I use the same method for removing rivots.
