i fought this issue on my pc all day yesterday. no internet....used the laptop to check C/Net. followed their instructions. seem healed but Ken's post worries me. i've had so many issues lately(2 crashes in 3 months).
damn updates!
Especially since the SP 3 is due out soon and this is going to be a big download. Prefer to do this through dialup which may take longer...but do not want to send my son's WB FAP up any more than needed to be right now.
Just to let you know... Service pack 3 (XP) came out in early spring. Chances are with automatic updates you'll find it listed in the set of installed programs already on your PC.
Did a Belarc, it still says I have Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. Also my "Systems" says the same thing. Although I found several security and hotfixes installed for XP 3. (along with those for XP 1 and 2)
Was on dialup until about three months ago when it should have downloaded...would have known if it happened. With a 26,4K connection (with a 56K modem) I would have certainly known it. (1500 megabytes makes for a very llllloooonnnngggg time download) Would have noticed it through my WildBlue satellite FAP if it had been done after getting that.
But I understand not everyone has downloaded it yet. Some have and are having issues. One of the reasons I had been leery of getting it at the moment.
I've been running SP3 for months without a problem. Windows XP has the "System Restore" feature in the Control Panel (system section, then System Restore tab). You can rollback the system to any point prior to updates if they cause issues. Works really well.
