Completed this install about two months back and is working out very well. 4 kids all with wireless head sets, dual 13.4 inch drop down screens, single source for input (today). They can play Xbox 360 or watch videos via the Xbox , mom and dad cruise in the peace of CD/MP3 music. The install was reasonable (about 4 hours) and I only had to remove the driver side C pillar cover. Power was tapped off the 3rd row power port that also served as a location for the video input ports. The only challenge I had was locating the roof cross members to mount the forward (2nd row) screen. Also there was an issue with mounting through the headliner rear air ductwork. I was able to use long screws with nylon spacers to keep from collapsing the ductwork and still solid mounting the screen to the roof.
Before:
After:
Power port and AV port location (power for inverter for XBOX power)
3rd Row mounting bracket
C pillar cabling for 3rd row screen (second row required extending cables for both av and power of the screens stock wiring to reach this point) plenty of room for wiring to be connected and then cable tied/wrapped/tapped and secured to the existing wiring harness seen in the picture.
Ample room the the Xbox 360 to be located next to the 3rd row seat (did some Ford engineer actually think of this space! If so thank you!)
In action with 3rd row screen up.
Two thumbs up from my 10 year old son for the cool video and sound in the X. Movies , video games, mom supplied the food and drink. 2100 mile round trip from Apex NC to Rock Bridge MO and back in May and all were happy.
Total cost for the two screens and 4 wireless head sets was about $450 plus a couple of bucks for some cable connectors to wire it all up (less then $50). $500 well spent!
The screens are Pyle PLVW1342R 13 Inch Roof Mount TFT LCD Monitor (no DVD player). I had to shop to find two. Found one at J&R (JR.COM) the other at carmobilevideo.com . J&R had them for $154.99 + shipping, Carmobilevideo was a little higher at $169 + shipping . Head sets I go from CarMobileVideo.com as well. (part number MVIRHP2CH) $20 each but they had 3 for $50 at the time so I got all 4 for $70 plus shipping. I was under a time crunch so I paid for 2nd day air shipping witch did increase my cost some. But you can see just in regular cost I'm right at $400 plus shipping. Love the internet for shopping for electronic stuff. J&R is a good company and I can say my one experiance with Carmobilevideo was quite good as well.
13.4 inch screen was the largest screen I could mount due to the contours of the headliner (pushing it just a bit). And yes, I see very little out of the rear view mirror, but normally when we travel my wife has stuff stacked up so I can't see out the back anyway.
I don't know if you'll find this exact screen. I had to search hard to find two. The Plye product seems to be good , at least a known name and place to go to get it fixed if needed. The head sets are not fancy but work and with the dual screens each having IF transmitters, I have no problem with IF signal to anyone in back.
Sounds like an awesome set up! I'd like to do something similar but your photos are no longer visible. Could you please repost your photos?
