Anyone else have this trouble with their running boards? My truck gets run through a wash almost weekly. This is on both sides. The passenger side one is slightly worse. 2011 12,000 miles.
Yep. Same thing on my truck. I gave up worrying. Truck is almost 3 years now, and its not getting much worse. When/if they get too bad, I will either remove them completely, or replace them with something better.
I have the optional tubular steps on my 2011 and they seem to be holding up, noticed my 20" wheels are starting to show signs of pitting/oxidation which is BS in my opinion. The wheels on my 2006 Infiniti look the same as the day I drove it off the lot. Both vehicles had $60K price tag, would think they would have similar quality wheels.
My rear dually wheels were replaced by Ford last year due to corrosion. The running boards are showing some signs of the same. The new rims are corroding around the valve stems. The truck also sees a through wash at least once a week. Bumper to bumper coverage ends soon! Looks like I'll be talking to my dealer again!
Stopped at the dealer this morning to get a new set put on. They had taken some pictures the last time I was in so that Ford would authorizate the repair. Took some time for a new set to come in.
I wanted to post a few pictures in case others were having this problem. The dealer can fix this for you (I have a great dealer).
They use Magnesium Chloride here in Colorado on the roads in the winter so I hit the car wash frequently in the winter to get it off and keep this type of thing from happening. My old 2002 7.3 oil pan started to rust out just before I traded it, which requires pulling the cab to replace. My main problem with the Lariat running boards is that they are slippery as hell when they get wet or snowy.
Mine start out looking like that every year after a long hard winter. I used elbow grease and the back side of a blue Teflon safe sponge. It is a freaking PITA to get them clean. They look nice once it's over. I hate doing it. I wish you could separate the chrome part from the black...then you could use a wheel on it.
I use Nevr-Dull on my real chrome, but I haven't tried it on the boards before. I'll try that next time.
