I did not read the entire thread, but you can run for at least two or three minutes at 1250-1300* without hurting the engine. There is no way the engine gets that hot where the pistons even come CLOSE to being 1200* themselves. You'd have some charred oil!
Guys... You are being WAY to conservitive... IH (the guys that build our motors...) say pre turbo temps of 1250 are the red line. You can cruise ALL DAY LONG at 1200 and not hurt a damn thing other then your pocket book fueling up.
You can spike to what ever temp you want to for 10-40 seconds and not hurt anything.
4" exhaust will help a ton for your EGT's (which are not bad anyway) and I tow up to 22k GVW with my race setting all the time. Drive by the EGT gauge, not the HP setting. I prefer the shifting in the race settings as well when towing.
