Yes, I've done it 3 ways in my 66 f-250, original it had 352 with NP425 4 speed, then I got rid of the 352 and put a 240 I-6 to the 4 speed ( the 240 had a 3 speed behind it originaly) , and now I'm just finishing up installing 4 speed with OD in the truck, this trans came out of a 1986 f-150 with a 300 I-6 this last install involved a mod to drive shaft length and drill to holes for center bearing mount for 2 piece driveshaft.
With 4 speed NP435 and 6 cyl, about 14 local and hiway mix, and I have a carb problem. I'm just doing the 1230 swap and no info yet. getting driveshaft back today. Yes my ratio is 4.10 and I've gone up 2 tire sizes from stock 650-16 to 750-R16
A nice swap for a Mid 80s TOD will drop right in with some drive shaft and floor mods.
That is fords 3 speed overdrive. A four speed alumimum case unit top shifted with fourth gear as an .67 OD. You can usuall pick these up at a pick a part for 50 bucks.
Garbz, thanks for the info on OD ratio, didn't know it. All you describe is correct on swap that i'm finishing up. Trans going in appears to be a TF 170 (code RTS) as per a tranny guide in another thread
