My 1996 powerstroke is hard to start and I was wondering if anyone knows a good way to see if the glow plug cycle switch is working.
The wait to start light comes on for only a quick time...
Thanks
I'd test it right at the glow plug at each cylinder, it should cycle long enough to heat the cylinder to about 140deg. Maybe only one or two work now coupled with it being summer so it heats them real fast. If its running good, has a strong injector pump and clean injectors you really shouldn't need them in the summer months.
It could also be a sign the compression is low or getting low.
If none of them have power to them then the relay is probably bad.
I'd have to look at the system to be more specific, been a while since I worked on a diesel.
The powerstroke's glowplugs are under the valve covers. the valve cover gasket has the wiring connectors built into it. sometimes the gaskets break, but usually your best bet is since you have the covers off, replacing them.
to test them while they're out, ive used a jumpbox to apply power and ground. the result is similar to a cigarette lighter where the end heats up. also check your relay as Danr1 said. if that turns out to be bad, i would suggest getting a Motorcraft unit, as i havent had much luck with the aftermarket ones.
