I did mine on my 1999 Mountaineer a couple of months ago and here are a couple of things I did to make it easier:
on the front I took off the little wheel well skirt held in by plastic pins which gave me easier access.
also on the front I used a saws all to cut the top bolts on the shocks - made quick work of it
On the rear I took the spare tire off to get to the top bolts.
Also on the driver's rear I dropped the fuel evaporator box (or whatever its called) down and it gave me easy access to the top bolts as well.
It's not bad at all. Going in through the wheel wells will definitely make it easier to get at the top bolts. Plenty of room in there if you do it that way.
Bass, what brand shocks are you going with?
I have Ranchos on my 2000 Sport now, but thinking about a set
of Monroe Reflexes next.......?
The hardest part of changing mine was getting the top nut off the front
shocks. It tends to spin. I finally cut it off like BJ did, using a Dremel and hammer/chisel.
