Helloeverybody,
`
-Just repainted interrior and am nowinstallang centech harness.
-Want to get my A/C working againand i have all the parts froma '73 and a '79.
-Impretty sureits factory A/C
- i dont know what the propper name for the part is, that is in the heater box behind the heater core some kind of condenser with two fittings that exit the box into the enginr compartement.
-i need the name of it so i can look for a new one.
Check with an AC shop. You are probably looking at an R134 system now, some parts MAY (or may not) be different, or it might be better to use different parts for such a conversion.
R 134A systems are normally designed with a larger Condensor core in front of the radiator. sometimes the evaporator core is the same size. I have had good success the a blend of refrigerants called freeze 12 but I don't know the laws in your area. Freeze 12 runs a lot like R 12 and uses the same mineral oil.
the evaporator shouldn't be any different for the r134a, but the expansion valve and o-rings are different. By the sound of what you are describing, the expansion valve is in the engine compartment, so you should be set for this part of your project.
Can that freeze 12 be mixed with r-12? My system is r-12 and i dont have any intentions of changing it over so is that stuff allright to run with the existing r-12 and stuff? How much a can is it?
Daddy does have 3 cans of r-12 but since that stuff is priceless he's not using it on my truck especially since we dont no if it will just leak back out. lol
The evap core can still be bought new for about 140.00. The expansion valve is the same for R134a the pre 77 expansion valve block was used by several auto makers up until 96 so if you need one take a look at some mercedes, jeeps, volvos, saabs and a few more that part number cross references with. The part is still sold new too for about 22.00.
You are not supposed to Mix for enviromental reasons, but technically Freeze12 will work with r12.
NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!
Freeze 12 is 80% r-134a. The other 20% is R-142b used to carry the old mineral oil through the system.
Although the manufacturer leads you to believe the two can be mixed (misleading labelling), mixing the refrigerants alters the pressure/temperature characteristics of both.
78Ranger_GARedNeck,
Whether you know it or not, using Freeze 12 is doing a (very shoddy) R134a conversion. That's exactly what you "have no intention of doing". The R134a does the cooling and the R142b carries the old mineral oil.
The only "advantage' to FR-12 is that you don't need to flush the old Mineral from the system and add a different type. Problem is, not flushing and properly servicing a 30+ year old AC system is a very bad idea.
Now, doing a proper service and conversion on your truck will let you field test it and make sure there are no leaks or other problems. You can then re-convert it to R12 with nothing more than swapping out the refrigerant.
I Had often wondered what was in the freeze 12 blend and how it still works with mineral oil. Is their a site with more info on it's chemical formulation

There is a chart at the bottom that shows the composition of the alternates that the EPA had tested. You can Google the MSDS on the individual components for more in depth info.
