"Dread"-For me,that is.It's about 5:45 a.m.and I just shifted vehicles around so I can start on a long dreaded project, replacing original door/vent glass, anti rattlers and vent window rubber,as well as back glass. It will all be smoked glass.Hope the neighbors don't mind the early start, but I need to start now, because I always screw up,and I understand this is a PITA project. Also, the local glass shops, who will inevitably have to bail me out, close early on Saturday.
lol, long dreaded project? Mines lasting more than 3 years and I'm still in the tear down stage, lol. I'd like to see the results with the smoke glass though, as I'm thinking of doing this as well.
Havi,I'll try to have my son help me post photos later. It's about 7:30 a.m.,and everything is demolished,I mean disassembled to where I can take off to the glass shop and have them r&r my new window and vent glass. No stripped screws,or anything bad so far, contrary to my usual luck.Does anyone remember "Bad Luck Schleprock" from the Flintstones cartoon, the guy with the black cloud perpetually over his head? That's usually me,and why I cringe when I anticipate doing these little projects.Steve.
Murphy, and his law, always prevails. When I was ready to leave for the glass shop, thought I'd better call to let them know I was on my way.Of course, their guy who does auto glass was not there today, only the commercial and residential installer,so I couldn't get my old glass pulled and new installed in their tracks. After calling about 20 other auto glass shops, some over thirty miles away, none were open on Saturday,so I drove the 15 miles to my original shop and had them sell me the rubber tape to have a shot at it myself.Of course,I failed miserably, destroying the rubber tape,so they'll get the job after all, on Monday.I knew something like this would happen. At least I got a few other small jobs done on it.
I'm surprised you had trouble with the new glass and the tape. Was the channel good and clean? If it's all rusty, sand it and paint it up good with red oxide primer (it doesn't show). Use soapy water to help it seat in the channel.
The tape would rip on me.He had two sizes, and whether I used the thicker one,or a double layer of the thin stuff,I couldn't get it to stay slick enough, even by constantly spraying it with d.w.soap and water. He told me they have equipment they use that makes it easy and kind of had a half smile at the prospect of me trying it myself. The channels were very clean.I only lost 8.00 in tape, gas money,a few hours of time, and a little more of my pride/dignity.What the heck;I'm married,I can take it!
