I am reaching wayyyy into the memory here but I think the tire valve stem tools work. Its worth a shot....I recall them working for R12 valves. If its leaking I'd probably get the right valve, referigerant is not cheap nowadays, and it has the compressor oil in the mix too.
Pop, make sure it's a Schraeder type valve. My 98 chevy truck had what I 'thought' was a Schrader but it actually had a ball in there that did the sealing. The replacement was about 10 bucks for the good brass one.
The Schrader tool and the valve stems can be had at O'Reily's. It is twice or so larger than the tire tool IIRC. Don't have it with me to compare.
I agree to do it right or you'll end up chasing your tail.......sorry, couldn't resist.
I'm probably not going to be much help here but I bought the fancy tire valve tool and it worked perfect on both the high side and the low side. Now here comes the not much help part. I can't remember if it was for one of my R-12 systems or 134 systems.....LOL
