Econoline Kingpin removal

How do you get the kingpin retainers out of the front axle? they look like rivets but im sure they were pressed into the axle. which way do you hit them out or press them? theres no bolt head to turn them out that i can see, its a '61 axle

The manual I have shows driving it out from the rear. In any case, look at both sides and drive from the smaller end with a pin punch.

Yes you have to punch them out. Then the Kingpins you need a tool to help press them out and new ones in. Some will come out no problems, but other will be sticklers.

Be sure to use a flat ended punch and not a center punch. A center punch will mushroom out the pin and make it more difficult to remove.
