Front wheel bearings

I own a 2000 F-250 4x4. I have been trying to change my front wheel bearings on the passenger side. I know they are sealed and they must be changed as a unit. I just finished getting everything pulled apart, and I'm wondering if I might have a bigger problem than just bearings. You'll have to cut me some slack because I'm not a mechanic, and I don't know the names for all the parts. Anyway, I know the bearings are shot because there is a lot of slack between the front and back part of the hub. The thing I am worried about is the seal or bearing or whatever it is behind the hub assembly. There is a lot of slack in it. I can actually grab the axle shaft and move it around quite a bit. I don't know if its supposed to be that way, but my thinking says no. Plus the entire thing is full of metal shavings. Any help would be great, and thanks in advance. Also I'm trying to figure out how to attach pics to this, so if anyone know please let me know. I guess I could just make a gallery for it. Thanks again.

the hub bearing is what holds the shaft in place..with out the bearing you will be able to move the shaft all around..if you pull hard enough you could pull the shaft right out... the seal in the axel houseing is just a dust seal..if its torn up then change it..the shavings you are seeing i would guess is parts of the old hub bearing...you should have new seals for inside the nuckle right??

Yes I have the seals. its the seal inside the knuckle that moves so much. I just wasn't sure if I was supposed to be able to move it like that. This is the first time I have attempted to do this myself. Also I noticed while I was looking a little closer there seems to be fluid leaking from the end of the axle tube coming from the differential. What is involved in fixing that and is it something I should try myself? Thank you very much for your help.

Ok I assume your talking about the axle to knuckle seal. Here is a link for replacing ball joints that I went buy for mine and it covers the seal i think your talking about. It takes something special to drive it. I used a piece of pipe for mine.https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/3...ll-joints.html Follow the link from guzzle's for needle bearing lube every 60k. Those needle bearings are replaceable also!!
