Problem for truck overheating?

I recently pulled a trailer in town heading out to the highway. I got halfway through town and noticed the smell of coolant, than the temp gage went up to H and the engine light came on. I was going a max speed of 50 km/h. I found the problem to be a hose clamp running right past the alternator and pointing into the fan. The clip was there but halfway down the hose! I moved the clip and locked it into the right place and no more loss of coolant or overheating.

Now to the point. When overheated, my fan did not kick in at all like it use to before with the old engine. Would this be the cause of the fan clutch or a temp sensor? I purchased a fan clutch just in case cause it was a good deal.

I would guess a sensor.

Maybe bowtiehatr or vloney will bring their expertise and ideas to bear on this one.

Cooling fans that get their signal from engine coolant temperature may not operate as expected when the coolant is low. In short, coolant temperature sensors need to be able to sense the temperature of the coolant.

If the temp. gauge went to high then the sensor must have seen it, correct??

I beleive that there are 2 different sensors for the cooling system. The one for the guiage is on its own, there is also one for the PCM which also monitors the coolant. The one for the PCM is the one that will control the coolant fan as well. Somtimes the PCM sensor crakcs and gives the PCM a false reading which will not allow the fan to come on. I am not 100% sure where the sensors are so hopefully someone will chime in with more experience.

Fan doesn't kick it into high anymore???

I'm hoping you get more replys cuz I've been running what seems like hot temps and suspect that the fan isn't working as it should. I have a 2003 (May) F250 Super Duty, 4x4, 6.0l diesel. The fan clutch was replaced in June 2007. In the last 13 months I haven't heard the usual, loud howl from the fan when temperatures rise. I now have a Palm PDA monitoring all my temps and my oil has been upto 252 degrees while towing! When is that fan supposed to kick into high gear? This fan clutch replacement was done by a Ford dealer. Any help would be appreciated.

As posted elsewhere fan temp turn on is suppose to be 210F. However mine rarely comes on even at 212F. It has never gone over 212F.
Your oil temp appears high I thought I read oil temp would be about 10F above water. 250 is a danger point?

I have a 2007 F250 6.0 powerstroke diesel. Has anyone ever heard of putting an electric fan (afternarket) on these motors?

as long as the fan clutch is working thats more than enough fan for the truck 6.0

If you are getting temp spikes headgaskets maybe suspect

I know my fan clutch is bad and it has to be replaced, just can't stand the roaring noise of the fan, so was thinking of going electric fan but didn't know if it could be done and be compatible with the computer

It would be best to just replace the fan clutch. I think rock auto has then for $250.00. Also make sure that your egr valve is plugged in. If not it can play havoc on the fan operation.

so your fan runs on high ALL the time

if thats the case you might have a bad temp sensor or something

I dont hardly ever hear my fan on high

My fan does come on when I turn the a/c on that's the only time I here it. The truck never run hot . But it is pushing antifreeze out through the cap. Which tell me head gasket time.

Could be a plugged oil cooler and failed EGR cooler also.

After running the engine, park on a downslope and then pull the EGR valve to look for coolant.
