Well I seem to have sprung my first leak. The drip is coming from somewhere behind the flywheel and is actually dropping off of one of the cross members. The fluid doesn't really seem like oil but its dark in color. it doesn't really smell like roasted tranny fluid but i'm no expert. i have a pic but can't attach. when will i be able to include attachments?? ideas on the leak source or places to look?
The first thing I would do is climb up on top of the motor and check to see if there is oil in the valley. If there is take note of if the oil is at the front of the valley or at the rear. Oil leaks on these motors are misleading. What appears to be a rear main seal leak is 95% of the time a minor leak from up top.
Check the top of the motor and then let us know what you find and we will help you diagnose this.
well i checked the valley (area between the cylinder heads on top of the block i'm assuming) and its dry as a bone. the back of the tranny pan right before the x-fer case is awfully damp. some kind of gasket maybe?
I kind of agree on the tranny fluid Barry. My transmission doesn't look anything like that one. Where does the dipstick tube attach? Could it be leaking from there?
I would say it's time to clean things up the best you can and see if you can pinpoint where the leak is coming from.
I should have labeled them, the first is the engine valley, the second is the cross member, the third is labeled rear of tranny pan and last is the spot on drive.
I recognized the leaves and zip tie in the valley, tranny pan, and concrete driveway, but I don't have any of those things. There seems to be an awful lot of gunk above the pan in that 3rd pic. I asked about the dipstick tube since it is above the pan, and my stick didn't come with one of those either.
to clarify. the first pic is the valley. it's dry so no bad pedestal rings or oil leaks there.
the second pic is the cross member right by the tranny pan. i wiped it off but that is where the fluid is dripping from. the third pic is a close up of the rear of the tranny where it mates to the transfer case. as you can see, it is awfully damp and seems to be the source of the leak. what gaskets are around there and could that be the problem?
