I have a 04 6.0 that I filled with fuel this morning and the gauge took over 20 miles to move up to 3/4 full. It was very empty and took 43 gallons of fuel could this have something to do with it? Or is my sending unit going bad?

I'm not sure what triggers this...mine does the same thing albeit a V10 motor.
If I fill up and I have over a 1/2 tank when I do so, it happens more frequently. If I happen to turn on to ACC to reset the trip odometer while it is filling and it 'registers' over 1/2 a tank it will get 'stuck' at that level and take a while to move to full...but it WILL move to full...just takes a long time...
Did you perhaps turn on the key to ACC while filling as I do sometimes?
I don't know what causes it on mine but I just wish the DOWN took as long to move! LOL
A lot of gauges do this. I find that all my cars do it if I put it on ACC then turn it off while its still filling. Also the sending unit sensor could be going bad and you could try a fuel cleaner to see if that will fix it. I just filled up my X yesterday with 34 gallons ($156 ouch!!!) and left the key out and the gauge went right up when I started it.
My superduty has done this since new. Ignition off during fueling, gauge responds instantly at restart. Ignition in any other position during fueling, causes the your gauge to respond slowly. My guess is that there is a PCM software bug. A cold start cycle shows correct level at startup.
That is true 44 gallons @ 17 mpg is a 1/2 a weeks worth of driving for me so I turned the garage into my very own fueling station and refinery. After owning PSD's since 97 and watching fuel costs rise I decieded to start collecting used cooking oil and making my own fuel. The neighbors think I am a little nuts but they dont seem to mind the fuel for there PSD. I just wish I would have started this when I owned my company and had 6 diesels rolling down the highway.
