I know "which oil should I use?" threads are dangerous, but here goes... I'm considering changing over to synth to extend oil change intervals and possibly going with bypass filtration- an acquaintance of mine is an Amsoil dealer and was telling me that Amsoil guarantees you 15-25K miles per oil change (dependent on useage- towing or not) with just their oil and filter- more if you go with bypass. Anyone run Amsoil? Thoughts/experiences?
There is an "Amsoil Anomoly" thread in the Oil & Lube forum which will contain lots of evenings of reading for you. Typically, the Amsoil discussion is not allowed outside of that thread due to the volatility of that particular aspect of the "which oil" topic.
Regardles, while its alive, I'll respond.
I used Amsoil with great success in my old '85 F150 inline 300. I purchased an Amsoil bypass system, found this web site, then sent the Amsoil unit back for full refund while replacing it with an OilGuard bypass system (the Amsoil unit bypass twice as much as the OilGuard, and creates some potential fro reduced engine oil pressure if the hose runs are too long). I proceeded to run 12K miles on Amsoil DEO, and began to see wear metals increasing rapidly. I could also hear the tell-tale signs of thinning oil viscosity by the engine sound, and decided I was not getting what I had wanted from the Amsoil product. Don't forget that the HEUI system on these 7.3's really does a number on an oil in terms of viscosity shearing, and it's even worse in the 6.0 engines.
I had already decided to try the Schaeffer's 9000 series 5W40 full synthetic, so I went that direction. 12K miles on the first run with Schaeffers, and I'm now about 6K into the second run with Schaeffers and I love the stuff. Wear metals, additive package, viscosity, flash points, etc. all look good, so I'm sticking with the Schaeffers 9000 until/unless I become convinced that another is better.
The other oil I would personally consider is the Rotella-T 5w40 synthetic, but it is actually more expensive (for me) than the Schaeffers.
I still hear lots of good things about Redline and Delo oils, too. There are other good ones, and I'm sure you'll hear all about them if this thread survives.
I run Amsoil and bypass, i have this Synthetic oil in everything in this truck. I mean everything. Love it been using it 5years now. Change oil once a year. We run it in motorcycle's our Subaru, sons Jeep Cherokee. would'nt use anything else!
Holy crap... I don't think I'll ever have the time to weed through 58 pages! I appreciate your honest input without bashing the product Pete... I'll have to do some research as time permits.
I really believe that the Amsoil product is probably good, but just not good enough for my own expectations in my F250. It actually gave me about 2 mpg increase in that old 300 in my F150, and lasted for a good 12-14000 miles without a bypass system. Like I said, though, the HEUI fuel system and HPOP on these 7.3's is not a setup that will be kind to anyone's oil.
pete, you make me want to change just for the experience, i have ran amsoil in every car since i was in high school. i have the bypass system on my truck, never had a complaint, but have never compared. pictues of my bypass are in my gallery
Nice looking bypass kit, Pat. I have pics of my bypass install in my gallery as well. I was able to stay within a 2-foot hose run for my setup, which means that the bypass element hangs underneath the driver side door... if there is ever a leak, I'll know as I walk up to the truck, but I've not had a problem with it at all.
If you do decide to try the Schaeffers, and I won't try to talk anyone into it, there is something I've learned recently that might have even changed my opinion on the Amsoil... whenever you change to a new brand of oil, you should run at least 3 complete changes through the engine so that the new oil's detergent/additive package has a chance to do a complete turnover. I'm seeing things improve on the oil as time continues with the Schaeffers, and have heard the exact same experience from several others who have switched. In other words, it takes about 3 oil changes before a new oil is really "settled in" in the engine.
That said, I still will not go back to the Amsoil just because of the oil cost. The Schaeffer's is performing so well, with promise of better performance to come, and is roughly $8-$10/gallon cheaper.
Like I said, Pat, I won't try to get you to change from what you're happy with, but if you ever decide you want to pursue it, I'd be glad to share my contact information.
I run the Rotella syn.(sometimes 15-40 dino blend) in mine starting at 15,000 miles and never seen as far as i can tell any metal shavings or heavy wear. I,m completly satified with mine. Thought about running the amsoil back then but it was hard to get around here.
I run my AMSOIL for 20K miles before I cange it (Change the filter every 10K until I start using the Donaldson Oil Filters I got a little while ago). I am no oil Guru by any means, but I really like the stuff. After 20K miles I will do an oil Analysis and it says that I am still good to keep running the stuff. I like the fact that AMSOIL pre filters the oil before packaging. Some oils are actually dirtier when they are new then after they have been run for 3K+ miles. I have heard of people running 70K+ with it. If you think about it, OTR Trucks run 100,000 Miles without chaning the oil or filters. Since I obviously don't put on as many miles as a trucker I am fine with just chaning the oil every 20K. Just my opinion though.
