amsoil

why is everyone against amsoil? What about the dual bypass oil filters they offer? I changed the truck to amsoil at 138000 miles and it still does not smoke at 154000 miles. Just wondering everyone elses experiences on this!!!

I think it's their distribution that people don't like.

For instance, I bought 75w150 Amsoil gear oil for my '01 Superduty. It was the LIST or MSRP price even though I was buying it through a "jobber" supplier, where I would normally get about a 50% discount.

So, dealers/parts-stores are locked into a profit-margin by the SUPPLIER not by the market.

I never use synthetic oil and never had an engine smoke. Even at 225,000 miles on one and 185,000 on another. Always change oil at 3000 miles. Castrol oil

Very good observation!!!

Two major problems with Amsoil:
1) Most of their oil products are NOT API certified, a requirement from ALL US vehicle manufacturer's for their warranty to stay valid.
2) Amsoil is a MLM company, which highly inflates the cost of their products!!

Amsoil is an urban myth spread through the internet.

This is the real deal. But are you manly enough for Satin Elegance?

If you have a diesel, Amsoil oils can be used as a maintenance advantage in that the rig is not in the shop for an oil change. In a commercial application that is sometimes critical to keep units on the road. For a gas engine or for a typical daily driver, there is no way to justify the cost of the oil and the by-pass unit.

I can only hope that you have set your expectations higher with the use of Amsoil oil and products. No smoking engine at only 150,000 miles can be accomplished with Walmart $.69 oil and changes at every 3500 miles. For the average driver, synthetics are a waste of money. They have no more lubricity than a dino so the wear is basically the same. They will flow at slightly lower temps for the non-specialty synthetics but not by much anymore. Plain ol' Havoline will flow at -31F and can be had for just over a buck a quart. Synthetics will handle a little more heat but by the time the oil temp is critical the engine is toast anyway. The dinos have made some extremely good advances in the last few years. Synthetics haven't changed much in the last 15 years.

Considering that this is your 3rd post at the FTE and you have migrated to this forum, the question needs to be asked:
Are you an Amzoil dealer? Are you a wholesale buyer? If so, you might want to read the note at the forum list. If you are not, welcome to the FTE. We all agree here that it is okay to disagree.

My Bronco just passed 175k and the engine doesn't smoke either -- and I never put any synthetic motor oil in it. (the lube in the rear axle is synthetic, however)

Yes, I would like to install a bypass filter sometime (so I can have 10k or more changes instead of 5k - 8k) but I'm not willing to pay the exorbitant prices some companies charge for them.

Maybe the question should be :

What does Amsoil offer that cannot be beaten in price vs performance by over the counter oils

Or :

Why does Amsoil use two different test parameters with their 4-Ball bench test within their own line

Or :

Why did Amsoil say moly was very bad to use in engine oil formulas for many years yet now use it in their oils

Or :

Why does the Amsoil 30wts thicken so badly at relative low miles

Or :

Why try to use their yearly oil interval they suggest with an oil filter change at 6 months when sometimes there are 4 quarts of make-up oil during that period

Or:

Do I make it obvious that IMO they don't make anything I want to buy ? I can take 1.69 per quart Citgo Ultralife out to 8k miles from spring to fall in a 3.0 Ford . Thats bang for buck .

I can choose a number of synthetics for less cost than Amsoil to run a year on w/o a filter change under the right conditions and not have it thicken up @ 40c and 100c and hurting the gas mileage throughout that time .
