Newbie here... Just purchased an 01 f-350ps. Have had it about 3 weeks now. Went out to start it this morning and it cranked over good but wouldn't start. Was making a strange clicking noise under the dash to the right of the fuse panel. Hadn't heard that before. Went back out an hour later and it started without the clicking sound. If you let it warm up it starts great without the clicking noise. I'm showing 14 volts on both batteries while it's running. Noticed I had a 20 amp fuse blown also but it started without replacing it at the moment. Runs great though. I also own an old 86 f-350 w/ a 6.9. This 2001 is so much nicer to drive. Thanks for any help.
Sounds like it might be the relay for the injectors. Someone will be along that knows the number for you. This will bump you up to the top. Would try to locate that relay. Look in the owners guide for the location.

Looked in the glovebox... no owners manual, was going to check what that 20amp fuse I replaced went to.
Welcome to FTE Jeepdude. Do you know how old the batteries are? If they are week they may have enough juice to turn over but not fire. Does this happen if the truck sits for a while? Like overnight then it is ok all day? Also check all connections make sure that they are clean and tight. How is your oil? Clean and full?

Not sure on the age of the batteries, they might be originals... they are motorcraft. 12.66 volts on both non cranking, I'm by myself at the moment so I can't check them while they are cranking. Terminals are clean. Overnight, Yes. Last night was the 1st time this has happened. I waited about an hour and tried again and it started. Oil is clean and within operating range.
When you checked the voltage on the batteries was it shortly after the truck was running? Or after sitting for quite a while?
About 4hrs later. I guess I might know a little more in the morning. If it does the same thing I'll try jumping it. Just seemed kinda strange that clicking sound under the dash... only when it was just cranking and not starting.
Checked voltage this morning before trying to start. 12.57 on one and 12.66 on the other battery. It started up 1st try, I shut it off 10 seconds later and tried again. Had that same clicking noise and no start. It took several more attempts of cranking before it started.
It happened again today, had my wife crank it over while I checked battery voltage. One had 9.3 volts and the other 8.2 volts. Doesn't sound sufficient to me. Anyone else???
That is way to low to fire off the truck. I would start by getting 2 new batteries. When you install them make sure that all the connections are clean and tight. As an added precaution I always coat my terminal with Noalox then put the clamps on, followed by a light coating on top. This will help to stop any corrosion.
Jim is on target. the clicking it relays making/breaking due to low voltage. I would also suggest you have you alternator check just make sure you problem is not there. No batteries will last with a weak alternator.
I'm assuming they are original , being they are motorcraft batteries, unless of course serviced by a dealer. Don't see any knock off date tags on them either.
Any thing less than 10.5volts will not start our trucks. Less will cause the PCM to reset. Be sure and replace both batteries with same type of heavy duty batteries. Several good batteries out there and some thats not so good.
