I have a 1988 f-150 with a 302. Lately, when I start the pickup the starter will sometimes stay engaged and it seems like you were just holding the key forward to crank the starter over while it is running.. I have to jump out and pull the battery cable off to get it to stop. Any ideas? Thanks.
Starter relay on fender sticking -----Tap it
Starter Solenoid on starter ---------Tap it-----Uggg it's under the truck
Sticking or misadjusted Ignition switch --Try adjusting it, it's on top of steering column under dash.
If you just disconnect the battery wire going down to the starter, you can check out the other components with a volt meter while it's stuck without pulling the battery wire.
Actually, you can diagnose it very easily. The next time it sticks, pull the small wire off your solenoid(located right behind your battery, where the other end of the positive battery cable hooks to in case you don't know.) this small wire just slips off. If pulling this small wire off stops it, then the problem is your ignition switch. If pulling this small wire off doesn't stop it, giving the solenoid a few karate chops probably will, then you'll know you have a bad solenoid. I suspect it's a bad solenoid, as my '88 F-150 did this very thing a couple years ago.
I am still very confused. I slipped off the wire that was described in an earlier post and the starter did not "dis-ingage." Everytime this problem occurs I just pop the hood, tap on the selonoid with a hammer, re-connect the battery and it will start just fine with no problems. Any other thoughts?
I had the same issue a while back. I replaced the solenoid with one from NAPA and have had no problems since. There's no solenoid on the starter motor on an 88 truck.
