question 'bout bumper hitches.....

Are these types of hitches legal in most provinces....SK most importantly. I need something easy to mount to a vintage vehicle. Years back dad used one and i know i would be checking the torque on the nuts for the first miles. I have read the Sk government regulations and no where does it say you can't, and my SGI guy hasn't gotten back to me.
This one is good for 1000 lbs and that is all my Boler camper is

I have no idea, but personally do like the idea. It would be handy though. How far are you pulling it. Those little Boler's do pull easy.

As far as I know they are still legal as long as you are towing within the capacity.

While it`ll probably work fine I don`t know if I`d trust that thin 50 plus year old metal in the bumper even though 1,000 lbs isn`t very much.
On my 56 M100 the previous owner had welded 3 pieces of 2'' sq tubing and bolted this to the frame, nothing fancy but it was stronger than the frame. Fairly quick, cheap and easily removable with 4-1/2'' bolts.

Fom's probably got the best idea... make something up that resembles a hidden hitch system...

Does that somehow clamp on to the bumper? I've never seen anything like that before.

That`s the way I`d go for peace of mind if nothing else.
As long as you have a welder available to use it`s not much of a cost, 5-10 ft of steel tubing is cheap insurance.

I think if you make your own hitch, and you get caught with it, you can get fined for it. For some reason I remember hearing about the DOT's caught someone back home with a home made receiver hitch, and they made him park the trailer, and go buy one.

The one on my M100 was pro built, solid and all it needed was sticker to make it look store bought. You never know but on a 1,000 lb trailer and an antique type car I doubt they`d look too close as long as it was apparently safe. I`m sure it could be a different story on a tandem 7,500lbs axle trailer.

They might not look closely, but at the same time, if ya ever got into an accident with a home made one, they MIGHT be able to dig abit, find it was home made (if it didnt have factory stamping or something on it) and you could get in big trouble for it.

Some of those DOT's, as jerkish as they can be, have a pretty keen eye for whats been factory built and what hasnt.

Its just something to ponder

I don't know about homebuilt hitches.....where would one find a hitch to fit a vintage vehicle (52 Ply). I did find a hitch to fit my 59 F100......no thanx to Cdn tire staff.
I think if it is made by a competant welder with good welds there should be no problem.

I am going the way of this bumper hitch because i don't have time to measure, buy design and cut steel. I then have to find a competant welder willing to do it. This type of hitch looks fine and i know we used to use one similar before.
I will reread the regulations but a homemade hitch shouldn't be any different than vintage vehicle frame modifications

Well so far it sounds like "homemade" hitches on any vehicle are illegal, they must be manufactured or a "brand name" hitch.....makes sense i guess otherwise some will have crappy bubble gum welds.
But now how does one go into Cdn Tire for example and find a hitch for a 52 Plymouth , i did get a universal hitch for the 59 F100 but it won't fit the Ply.
The real live person i talked to at the Highways office was going to get back to me with an answer on the bumper mounted hitch......he initially thinks that would be okay on said vehicle.

Thanks for this up date.
This makes me wonder what is happens if a qualified welding shop makes an unavailable custom hitch......Or even if that`s allowed any more.
Pretty soon we`ll need a journeyman`s licence to put fuel or antifreeze in our own vehicles!

I thought I heard or read somewhere that if a welding shop has a "stamp" or some way to mark it as being done by a professional, then it was legal.

Thanks for posting shuane, I kinda figured that home made ones were illegal. I too can see why they shouldnt be allowed. Some guys out there can not weld, and just think of the havoc they could cause.
