ign. switch or solenoid?

went to start my truck today and nothing, not even a clickin solenoid.....i ran a wire from the batt. to the coil and shorted the solenoid and it fired up.....what is the most likely culprit? also i need a diagram of the wires coming from the solenoid...mine are a mess and i want to clean them up.....i believe the motor is from a 76 torino....but they all should be basically the same right?

If you can engage the solenoid manually by applying power to the post that goes to the ignition, I would say your ignition switch is damaged.

Don't short the coil to the battery; that will burn up the coil. It can't handle full 12V. Sounds to me like your ignition switch is bad also.

How did you short your solinoid? If you went across the solinoid using the two 3/8 studs with the battery cables on them you bypassed the solinoid and it may be the problem. Try putting 12 volts to the small start stud and if it works your switch is bad.

Start is a different contact in the switch.

The easiest way is to take a 12 volt test light (less than $10) or a volt meter, and have some one hold the key in the start position. Check the small wire on the solenoid (the one that comes from the ignition) to see if it has power. The light should go on and off as the ignition is turned from start to off. If you have power there with the key in the start position, you've got a bad solenoid. No power there and you've got a bad ignition switch or a wiring problem. You can diagnose the whole electric system on these older trucks with a $5 test light.
