Just Bought an 04 f150 2wd auto with the 4.6. Never owned a mod before or an auto. Going to be using the truck as a daily driver with some occasional light towing, nothing heavy.
What to watch out for mtnce wise? Spark plugs soon, oil changes etc, anything else to be on top of?
Which 4.6 is in this truck? Which heads/intake is this, what are some good basic mods? CAI, headers etc?
how many miles on the truck? changing all the fluids and filters (air/oil/fuel) is always a good idea when buying a used car/truck. coolant flush, tranny fluid, diff fluid and fuel filter are usually the ones that people never do while owning the car/truck
I think they all have the same tranny, 4r75E. as far as mods, depends what you want from the truck. most bang for the buck are probably gears. put 4.10s or 4.30s in there; a tuner and full exhaust + cai will gain you a bit of power, but won't make as big of a difference.
i've got an 07 4.6 i was thinkin of supercharging it, goin for the big power, its got 3.73s in it now so i'd like to get 4.10s, i think u'd be best with 4.30s for towing and a full intake and exhaust
8th digit in the VIN is "W," which you'd think would mean a Windsor motor, but it is the code for Romeo. Not much difference in power, but parts interchangeability between Windsor and Romeo is not 100%.How many miles? That will make a big diff on what maintenance you need, as well as how the truck was (probably) used, based on condition...George
Change ALL of your fluids, and to be safe, change the plugs and wires too. Jack it up, and let all the wheels spin and look for driveshaft vibration. Pull the wheels and look for grooving on the rotors, and measure the pads. If the inners are worn more than the front, then the calipers are sticking a little. No biggie and you can lube the slides when you replace the brakes.
You should have told the dealer you wanted to have it checked out by your local shop before signing the paperwork, since it's used. We would have done a back to front/top to bottom inspection for $100.00, and on a lift would have taken about an hour. Would have given you bargaining room when you went back for the final price. Our inspection includes checking the A/C pressures, brakes, suspension, all fluids, charging system, cooling system pressure test (leaks), and if we're bored, we might even pull a plug or two....We love to find stuff since you're BUYING it...
Believe it or not, $100.00 is worth the price when you're looking at spending a few thousand to buy a vehicle.
Thanks for all the replies so far the plan is
oil change
tranny flush
change gear oil in diff
spark plugs
brakes are in good shape, nice that it has 4 wheel discs, changing pads/rotors/calipers is a snap anyway. So far I really like the truck, runs and drives great, still waiting to do an accurate mpg calc. Thanks again, Matt.

Glad the brakes are good...changing the rotors on a 2wd are NOT a snap though...enjoy it when it's time!!
