i have the tranny out of my ruck and i noticed that the up pipes are leaking, i dont really want to spend $300 on the bellowed up pipes and i was wondering if anyone makes a metal "crush" gasket, sort of like the copper o-ring header gasket.
Jim gave you the part # for the Chevy donut gasket. It's thicker than the original and is supposed to seal better. So use that one because some people have good results. However, it doesn't always work. That will depend on the condition of your current pipes. Once you redo the donut gaskets, they might hold for another 100K miles, or they might start leaking after only a few thousand. I chose the bellowed pipes to do it once and never look back. After looking at the design of the stock up-pipes, it's no wonder they leak all the time.
I'll pay you back later in the year. I just bought a new sectional leather and microfiber couch, leather chair, new computer desk, leather ottoman, new TV stand... 400 square foot of porcelain tile and am paying a guy to put it in.... new pony for the daughter...oh yeah I just bought a set of front shackles and 4 inch rear blocks and U-bolts from Superlifts....gotta keep the PMS going if I'm buying all that new stuff for the wife and daughter....come to think of it, my son and I may need a new 4 wheeler and dirt bike....
If you are NOT going bellowed (I understand) be ready to get new stock ones (pipes) Just in case, but when I got mine apart the gasket actually rubbed a ring around the actaul pipes. I was lucky enough to bother the dealer ($100+) with there last set on hand. so I saved $200 not going with the bellowed, but ended up spending more than the $30 or so for the gaskets. Good luck.
Hey Scott.
Are they a sponser here. I don't see them on the list. Do you know how much they are asking. I have them ordered through IH. Some kind of special type order, direct from the factory. I had to prepay them to make that kind of order. I need to check with them.
does having the ceramic coating make that much of a difference?
i called IH and they said $300 for the bellowed pipes. but i saw the ceramic ones on pure diesel power for $450 is it worth the money? dont know if they have them in stock though.
i think the manifolds should be coated also, does anyone sell them already coated? i live in reno NV and cant find a shop that does ceramic coatings
Not sure if they are a sponsor here or not. I know they have the up pipes though as I saw a pair in their showroom when I was hanging out there. They are just down the road from me.
The ones that diesel innovations sells are not the IH pipes. These are a "high flow" bellowed up pipes. Notice they also have flex joints in them probably to allow foe flex when the engine moves under load. I have no experience with them just observations from looking them up.
Miller, What MTDewX said! I just got back from BTS. I knew my trans would be out and after hearing about leaking up pipes, I started reading up (pun) on the subject. I came to the conclusion since I'm keeping this truck until I see Jesus it would be prudent to correct this defect. I wanted the IH bellows but as you know, they're out-of-stock. I saw DIs, called and spoke with David and decided to order his with ceramic coating. I was very impressed with the quality of his UPs. I had heard about the Chevy donut fix, but something in me said don't do this half-way.
Kale from BTS installed the UPs for me and we got to talking and I mentioned the Chevy donuts, he said they had started that experiment approximately 5 yrs before but later discovered the Chevy donuts were too tight and due to expansion & contraction wore holes in the factory up pipes, obviously making the situation much worse. BTW, I couldn't see it prior to, but discovered my right up pipe was leaking pretty good. Every photo of a leaking up pipe I've seen has been the right side. I wonder if.....
Anyway, if you're keeping this truck do it right and forget about it. Best of Success!
