I'm putting an AOD transmission from a '92 Thunderbird in my '79 F150. I need the VSS for the computer and the speedometer cable for my speedometer in the dash. Can the VSS also drive my factory speedometer cable that's currently in my C6?
Here is what the VSS looks like. I borowed this pic from the internet, and it isn't the actual part I have.
I've got a speed sensor that has a clip securing the cable to the opening under the sensor body. Inside is a guide that will hold a speedo cable so it should work with cable and sensor. I'm using this VSS to hook up an efi kit from Painless in the near future and they said this would work.
Kind of hard to see but the hold down clip is visible on the main body
The AOD equipped vehicles like my truck have cable driven speedos, but I'm not sure how the computer gets the speed info.. even though I know it does.. I get a speed indication on the tuner I have when connected directly to the computer. Maybe they use the RABS sensor to feed the computer, this is how it was done after they stopped using cable speedos somewhere around '92.
Yes, the RABS sends the signal to the computer if you have no VSS. It sends a different signal that the VSS does, otherwise I would locate an 8.8 with RABS and install it.
