Today we took the 85 out for a little road trip. The shifting didnt seem to good it shifts really soft almost to where you cant feel it. It also was shifting very soon almost as soon as you take off it shifts. I got it adjusted to shift around 20MPH and around 42MPH. Does that sound about right or does it need adjusted more? The C6 will shift only 2 times correct to make it a 3 Speed?
Also what ATF fluid should be used in it?
About the shifting, what can be done to make it have more of a stronger shift? Maybe A shift Kit? Would that be a good idea or bad beings its a diesel?
yes shift kit works well(like b&m trans pack) but if it has a bunch of miles on it you mite want to think about a rebuild.and type F is all i run in all my
C-6s seems to hold up well.there is a trick you can do on the vavle body without having to buy a kit that will help its like the 1st stage on there kit just have to pull it out and take it apart but you could change the fluid while your doing it.if your up to it let me know here
How are you adjusting the shifts? Your diesel has a special variable vacuum gizmo on the throttle linkage to make this transmission work correctly with the diesel.

Yeah thats what I was adjusting. The thing was moved all the way to the front of the motor, right now its sitting about a quarter way back, Maybe it needs to go farther...Typically speaking what should it be shifting at?
Quesey can you go in further detail about what your talking about?
I would go ahead and change the fluid and the filter if you haven't already. I would look at the flexplate(take the flywheel inspection cover off) and turn the engine by hand to see if you have a torque convertor drain plug. If you do, I would drain it, and then take the tranny pan off and drain it and change the filter. You will need about 13-14 quarts to fill it all back up.
Sounds like you are in the ballpark with the throttle adjustment.
How do you adjust this valve? I am a complete noob to these trucks and specifically automatics. This is my first automatic! What is it called exactly, I can take a look at my diagrams to locate it.
My truck has a 460 mated to a C6 with a diff with 4.11 gears. It shifts way earlier than your truck and is in 3rh gear before 42mph. Does that sound correct??? I always thought it seemed unusual but thought it was just the nature of the beast.

You have a gas truck. You do not have the vacuum valve on the throttle. You can adjust yours by taking the vacuum line off the modulator(passenger side rear of tranny) and then sticking a small screwdriver up in the hose nipple and adjusting a small screw. Turn it a little bit one way, and then try it. I forget which way does what.
P.S. The diesel also has this adjustment too, so with the throttle gizmo and the modulator adjustment, you can get a diesel way out of wack.
Sweet, thank you both for your input. I will play around with this, my truck seems to be in 3rd gear at like below 35 mph wtf. Or maybe it is still in 2nd, I will have to mess around with the modulator.
Quesey that is a nice Mustang btw. My dream car is a 69 fastback and eventually drop in a 428 or a 429(maybe a 460 even lol:P). They looks so sweet.
