I got a 2001 f-250 7.3. After starting today I was leaving the job and noticed a loss of power, I got back to my house (maybe 1.5 miles) and switched trucks. I got back 2 hours later, same thing. Drove it to my friends shop maybe 3- 4 miles (not a diesel dude) and he checked for tsbs etc. It was throwing no codes either.
Finally I convinced him to test drive it 1-2 miles and it died on him, he thinks its a fuel problem.
My excursion had this happen when my sister borrowed it and it was a fuel rail pump? Does the f-250 have this too or is it in the tank? If it is I can fix easily cause I put on a lift bed last fall (awesome)
It is in a retail parking lot and I would love to fix it there w/o towing it. Any easy way to diagnose with out towing to shop.
Unless someone put another in it, the only one is under the drivers seat. There is a pick-up screen in the tank that could be clogged. I would also check the fuel filter under the hood. When was the last time that was changed.
It's time i'm sure the truck has 115k on it I change it every 30k so it's close. It started running like crap all of a sudden though and the cut off. I think it's more than the filter. How do you check/ clean the pickup filter?
Drop that tank and take a look. I haven't ever done it on this truck, but I have heard it described. You can check the pump by emptying the fuel bowl and then turn the key to the on position, but don't start it. The fuel bowl should fill up very fast. Less than 5-6 seconds. You can try to blow compressed air through the fuel line back into the tank as well. Just know that you will have introduced a lot of air into the system, so it will take a while for it to work it's way back through the injectors. So after you do the blow through technique, the truck will run rough for 30 or so miles.

Won't the fuel spray everywhere, should he put the cap on the fuel bowl and collect the flow from the drain tube?
When is the last time you filled up? Could it be bad fuel? Which may mean the pickup screen has debris or the fuel filter is mucked up.
I did fill up like 100 miles ago, but it went from runnin like a dream to DEAD in maybe 7miles getting progressively worst each mile.
I don't have to drop the tank cause I got a dump bed.I can see the top of my tank in less than 5 seconds!! But I guess regardless, I need to change the filters in my truck and Excursion. Thanks HKusp for the reminder.
