I have used a total of 4 different vehicles to tow the same rig. The trailer empty weighs 1750#. I have owned and used the same trailer for 17 years. I started with a 1973 swb Ford full size Ranger running a 360 and C6, Next was a 1993 4.0 auto explorer, followed by a 1995 Lincoln Town car and finallly the 2003 Ranger.
In summary they all got the job done and the Town Car was the best tow vehicle (more weight and decent power). Willard will have more power by over 100 ft lb of Torque but be lighter in weight and have a shorter wheel base. I have not been running an equalizer hitch with sway control but it is on the list.
As I mentioned above I really do not want a big, specialty tow vehicle to store feed and care for.
I know one thing I have been toying with on my F-3 is to actually build/have 2 separate beds. I know with a lot of the things I haul (or hope to haul one day), having a 5th wheel and goosneck hitches would be really nice.. however I can't do that with my utility box in the way.
This past weekend I started scheming up a way to make the utilty box.. and either the stock Express Bed or a flatbed with a quick change out system. This would allow me to have the utility bed on for shows and such, but to be able to swap that off and put on the Express bed/ flat bed with the 5th wheel setup... I should be able to tow quite well with my long wheel base and 1 ton running gear and brakes
Yes my truck has 6 lug 17" wheels with HD all season tires, locking rear diff. Toyota, Nissan and Honda all have 1/2T pickups that can by optioned to tow 10K#, haven't you seen the commercials?
From others on here that have weighed their trucks, most 53-56 F100's curb weight is close to 4K#.
