i just bought a 460 to put in my 86 F-150 and i planned on rebuilding it before i put it in. i was thinking of useing the federal mogul FEM-MHP178-311 kit from summit with a edelbrock performer or performer rpm and either comp cams X4262H or X4256H. which of those would yall recomend or is there something else that will work better?
Whatcha plan to do with it? Go fast? Pull stuff? As far as the rebuild kits go, make sure you need to go the lengths of cutting the crank before you jump into that particular kit, it's set for a .010 cut on the mains and rod journals. I've heard a lot of bad regarding the hypereutectic pistons in the 460, but again, that's going to depend on the application. Personally, I'd look for something with forged pistons, and have a more secure feeling about not having to tear into it again anytime soon.
The cams you mention, the 4262H is supposed to be good for midrange, it'll work with the factory converter, and you'll hear it at idle. The other, 4256H is going to probably be stronger on the bottom thru the midrange than the 4262, be sorta choppy on idle, I believe works behind a stock converter.
i aint worried about a converter i have a 4 speed. i know that is for a 10/10 grind thats what i plan on doin unless it needs more for some reason. i was unaware of the bad standings of those pistons ill look for forged. this is going to be my weekend toy / work truck for hauling fire wood or just messing around.
