Some clown (me!!!) backed the Wifes '04 F250 into a 3' tall concrete filled post in an unfamiliar parking lot in a driving rain last winter. Gil in Athens got me a new Ford rear bumper.
In the process of changing it last week, I was annoyed at the amount of junk; scrap metal, firewood chips, hay, tree trimmings, gravel etc that had accumulated on top of the curved rear bumper support and end of the spare. Not an easy place to police. I have some .040 stippled rather stiff aluminum sheeting. I cut a 6' x 32' piece, bent a 1/4 180 on one long edge at the local sheet metal shop, filled it with silicone calk, slipped it over the corresponding lip on the bottom of the beds end member. I had trimmed the back edge of it to fit the contour of the bumper, drilled two holes to match the bumper mounting flat head screws, siliconed that joint, installed the screws, plastic tread pieces. Now I have an easily accessible shelf to prevent the accumulation of undesirable items.
have any photos of metioned project? I picked up a used 06 this Jan and there is MUD packed in every opening under the truck. I know the spare was jammed full with aleast 50lbs of MUD.
Hmmmmmm. Mud may get places that would be hard to block considering its almost liquid state when being splashed wherever. This device was to prevent crumbs of whatever the wife hauls from falling through the opening between the back of the bed and the tailgate, about 3-4" of open space exists there, and piling up behind the bumper. Gravel in that area could take out a following vehicles windshield!!!! She hauled bales of hay Friday, this device kept pounds of potential wet grass from lying on subject to rusting metal parts. The only way I can imagine to protecting the top of the spare from filling with splashed material would be a completly flat cover trapped above it, then anything splashed would lie there instead of on/in the tire/wheel.
I could send a picture to you via an email as I dont know how to do it from here. E-mail me] and I will send it by the reply button.
