multiple issues

I have a 1991 f-250 diesel 4wd that is having issues. I have melted 2 positive battery terminals and the cable gets too hot to touch. It also starts quickly, but runs about 5 sec then shuts down. You have to crank for a long while to restart it. I replaced a fuel line that had a leak, but other than that I don't know what it is. Could someone help me out with this?

Two pos. terminals melted and pos wire gets hot? Is this after extended cranking? You should only crank these engines for 20secs with a 2min. cooling to protect the starter. However it is possible you have a bad connection to the battery or a bad pos. wire. Make sure everything is clean and tight from the battery right back to the starter. The starting problem is a classic case of an air leak in your fuel system. This allows fuel to drain back to the tank after the truck has been sitting for a while. There is enough fuel in the injector pump to start the motor but then it air locks and stops. It then takes extended cranking to fuel the system again. The most common place for air leaks in the pre-powerstroke engines is the injector overflow pipes. These are easy and cheap to replace. However examine all fuel pipe connections. Hope this helps.
