engine light

Hey, Ford owners, hope someone can help me out. I have a 2002 250 SD with 7.3 diesel. Heres my problem, engine light comes on at random, when im cruising down the road at 70 mph, when im idling at stoplight, when i first start in the morning. Not every time, but unexpectedly, sometimes no problem for a week, sometimes 15 times a day. The biggest problem is, when the engine light comes on, i have zero throttle response. It will idle when the light comes on, but no throttle response. As soon as the light goes out, throttle response comes back. The light only stays on for about 10 seconds, but its a bummer pulling out into traffic with no accelerator response. It has 75,000 miles on it, and the cam sensor has been replaced twice. Help

Have you check for any codes?? That is where I would start..

If you don't have a code reader pick up a scanguageII and you can monitor the truck while you are driving..

Don has a point. If you get the codes read we'll know exactly what's going on. If you just want guesses, I'll throw out the TPS. The truck is fly by wire, so there's no linkage between the go pedal and the motor. You can check the box on the pedal that has the wires going to it and make sure nothing is loose. I believe you have to replace the whole pedal assembly for a bad TPS.

Of course clean fresh oil & filters are important on these engines too. Getting the codes would be the easy thing. Let us know what you find.

Thanks guys

Thanks guys for your response, I have run a diagnostic, no fault codes come up. The oil and filters are changed regularly, as is the fuel filter. I will check out the TPS. Any other ideas. let me know. HAPPY FORDING

What did you use to check for codes? Most of the standard OBDII scanners, including the free scans at the auto parts stores, won't pull all the codes from the 7.3 engine. If the check engine light came on, there should be a stored code unless you've disconnected the batteries or driven long enough without the light to clear it.

thanks

Hey guys, thanks again for your replies. Finally found the problem. Throttle position sensor is bad. Kudos to F350-6 for your correct guess. As always, HAPPY FORDING
