I don't remember the ribs above the head liner, but a sharp drill bit will cut through it either way. There are some pilot point bits that are rather nice.
The roof is curved close to windshield, so your going to need to take your time in placing the lights. Get some wide masking tape and tape up the roof, then position your lights and draw their out line with sharpie. Slap your template in the out line and drill the holes.
ha, i knew i saw it somewhere. i have it in my favorites. i have all the stuff but i dont have the b***s to drill in my roof yet. plus i have to take my headliner out. and thats like 11 feet long. thanks for reminding me about it. oh, both of you have great writeups.
No different from the factory doing it. Wouldnt be the first time, I drilled and mounted lights on my 75 ...
Unibits are the ONLY way to go!!
Well yes and No , A factory cab light truck has the holes pre-made , Then the cab is dipped for rust, primed and painted.
I am sure you will have no problems but just the thought of drilling all those holes just for the look's of it would scare me.
Many members including myself have done it on our trucks and it is not that difficult to do. You also do not have to remove the whole headliner, just drop it a bit in the front. Many dealers install these after the trucks hit the lot and they do it the same way the instructions are laid out - the trucks already have the plugs for the wiring harness to plug right in on the passenger side kick panel. (Excursions don't have it prewired I don't think). Easy job, just measure twice and drill once. I would rate this about a 2 out of 5 on a difficulty scale.
well, not pre-made. more like punched out. there are tools out there that actually punch the holes instead of drilling. it doesn't really matter. greenlee????i also use touchup paint on the bare metal surface after i drill through things. sort of preventative maintenence.
