How hard is it to pull an engine from an 87 E450 found one with a 6.9 on craigs list for $600. says it smoke a bit but I would be using the the fule system off my truck any way. Is it going to be more trouble than its worth?
It won't be pretty since the engine is so tucked away in the E series. At a minimum, the rad support has to come out completely. Is it possible to run or briefly drive the van?
Yeha it should drive it just smokes. If I do get it I'll probly take a sawsall to the front to gain access to the engine. The crappy part is to pick it up I'll have to put my truck back together and barrow a trailer otherwise I would have to buy it get insures then go to the dmv and get a moving permit.
do a compresion test and probly check the valve guids if thats good swap my rockers in and put my IP injectors and turbo on and runn it. I can't realy aford the gaskets needed to tear it down.
Well what stuff would I need to get to tear it down I know I would need a head gasket kit but what els also what stuff would I need to re seal al the exaust from the manifolds to the inlet of the turbine? Also the head bolts aren't re use able arwe they?
I don't think there are any special gaskets for the turbo kit. The head bolts for the 6.9 are not TTY I've been told, so they can be reused as long as they aren't rusty or pitted, you will have to limit your boost though. A complete engine kit runs around $1000 so a gasket set can't be too much.
from experience , it is usually much cheaper to buy the engine parts individually than in a kit
the last 7.3 i rebuilt the parts were less than $700.00 including a new oil pump
when you buy a kit it has to be assembled by someone with all of the correct selective parts
i.e. bearings , main and rod plus rings are all selective fit
