Today, I accepted a job 40 miles from my home, at 1/2 the pay I used to make, with a Job Title I held 30 years ago, with minimal benefits.... and I am as grateful as I can be.......
I have been out of work for 10 months. There are few things more brutal on your self-worth than busting your rear-end every day for an opportunity, and you can't buy a ******* Interview at 57.
Somebody once said "Shared Sorrow is Half Sorrow - Shared Joy is Double Joy"........
Once I dig out from under the Bills, I can actually imagine buying a few parts for the Truck
Congrats, Eman. Glad you landed something. I know what you mean. I have retired 3 times but am blessed with good health and would like to work a few more years. Like you, at 67, people think that you can do nothing. The truth is I can out work most younger men. It's not because they can't work but many have no work ethic. This may not be the job you would prefer, but it will put beans on the table and does loads for your self respect. Hope it works into something good.
Good to hear. I been making do buying and selling here and there. My wifes job is keeping us a float and paying the bills. 2 kids and a list of projects. Were stuck now where she has the insurance and a stable job if I do find something we cant afford to pay to have the kids watched...
years ago our town's factory closed. It put alot of people out of work, and most those who were in their later 40's and 50's had a hard time getting jobs. It most certainly isn't fair. To me it seems most disrespectful. Knew one guy specifically who had a heart attack, and was considered a risk to hire.....that's plain wrong. These were guys who kept the town afloat while the company did operate, and before that most were likely Vietnam vets, Korean war vets, WWII vets, and they got frowned upon by younger business owners who were only covering their own a$$,, refusing to accept knowledgeable labor over young guys who were accepting less pay. I'm younger, but I grew up in that town, and watched my dad fight his way through making Christmas wreaths to make ends meet, until he eventually went back to school as an airline mechanic, only to lose his job 17 years later when Northwest airlines went out. Now he's accepted a job that pays half what he used to make, and is happy just to keep working. Sorry for the rant.
E-dawgie, hang in there, and keep moving on the stepping stones.
Glad you found something! Don't give up hope of getting back into your old line (and pay); we're seeing all kinds of interest in setting up meaningful (i.e., manufacturing) jobs in the US due to the decline of the dollar against the Euro. All I can say is, it's about freakin' time!
Glad to hear you're back at work. Been there, I've been checking around at age 59 and know what you mean. I'm working but dissatified with job.An old friend was telling me one day that men are all wrapped up in their jobs and when they are out of work, laid off, retired or whatever men have lower self esteem. I know the bills are worrying you for now and I hope you get ok with that. My friend told me that when you see a bunch of women sitting around at a cookout they are passing baby pix around and talking about family and men are all talking "shop", all about the job. Now I think the women are on the right track because men feel worthless when put out to pasture but women are happy to have more time to spend with the family. But all of us are on a different track and we just want more time to play with our toys so I don't think this crew will get all down when it becomes retirement time. 2yrs.-3months but who's counting?
Best of luck to you
Mike
something is better than nothing , and at the least it'll make you feel better . congats .things are crappy around here too and i heard rumor they might be shutting the springfield postal plant down and might put me in your old situation .............. or worse i might have to go back over the road
Good for you! Getting and keeping a job is getting hard to do. This economy has got to improve soon. With wages stagnant or declining and gas and food prices rising, we are all in trouble.
My job right now is likely going to go away. I have worked at this place for 11yrs. 2 yrs ago they had 125 employees, now there are less than 10. The owner is determined to stick it out till there is an upswing in the local housing market, we manufacture cabinets. The problem is that there is at least 2 years of new home inventory unsold.
Thanks for humbling me E-dawgie. I was sitting here disappointed at having to work this weekend because This is the sixth weekend I have not been able to work on my '52 F1.
I'm glad you found some work. I have always had a job and I don't know what unemployment is but it must suck not working. Our prayers are with you.
congrats. You will no doubt do well at the new job having already performed those duties. And you will have a lot to offer others around you that do not have as much experience. Enjoy the new position
I feel your pain, anger, and discust. I had to have 3 neck surgeries about 3 1/2 yrs ago and I am still fight to get back to what I used to be and be able to do. docs had told me that I would be lucky to do the basics. Well that wasn't good enough for me. I have been fighting pain weakness and a bunch of " you can't do that" but I have shown them all that you can't keep an old stuburn mule down. I was just recantly able to get back to doing some kind of work at a pay that doesn't compare and no benys. but it is a start I am going back to school and finishing my degree in Cj and going to get in to juvy work. Oh did i mention that I am only 32 and this happend at work. 2 blown discs perminant nerve damage and spinal cord damage and I am still working on my dads 52."I have been beaten kicked yelled at and shot at and I still get up in the morning and keep my head high." so yes glad to hear some good news on someones behalf and good luck. I was told once before my first sugery there is always somebody worse off then you. I would still like to meet them and help them get something done that would make their day a little better. Enough of my ramleings godd luck congrats and hold your head high. whosays you can't teach an old dog new tricks... latter Casey
