The real solution is an upgraded alternator. I had found the upgrade parts, but I wasn't sure of my ability to install them in my housing, so I went with a H-O Alternators 230 amp alt. For nearly half the price you can get a power master 200 amp alt. Either way, it's time for upgraded charge wiring, depending on the alt you get, upgrade the charge wire from the alt, the motor to chassis wire and the chassis to battery wire.

With my 230 amp, 1/0 gauge wire was recommended and that's what I did. With the 200 you can probably get away with 4ga.

Conversely, if you don't mind dipping into the battery, you can just make sure you have enough battery to handle the occasional discharge and capacitors for the amplifiers.

How much did the upgrade cost you?

I buy at jobber -10, so your not going to find the same prices around. The Alt I got through Metra, through Tsunami for around $450, then I bought a 25' spool of red and black 1/0 wire, I think the wire and terminals cost me around $130.

You should be able to get a powermaster 200 amp for just less than $400, then buy the wire by the foot for probably $2/ft, I'd get 6' of red and 10' of black, 6 terminals, and the dress up stuff like electrical tape, split loom, and heat shrink.

I saw a Class D wrecker on an accident scene tonight. It had these very bright rectangular flood lights that lit up the entire area behind it. Any idea what those were? That's what I am looking for.

Find a Wrecker supply dealer and get them from him. When I drove wrecker back in 1998 I think they were roughly $50.00 a set.

OK, this is test practice for me, but.

Upgrade the ground wire, frame to battery (you can do body to engine too) to the largest wire you have in the truck or larger. Upgrade the wire that runs from the alt to the battery to at least 4 awg.

next step is add a capacitor, but my teacher doesn't like this step, it's not a cure all. Third is add another battery. Lastly upgrade the alternator.

AAK625: You may want to look at Light Force lights. They are not cheap, but they are bullet proof, literally. You buy the light and then can clip on either spot, or flood, or a combo lens. The 'glass' part of the lens is Lexan, which is what bullet proof glass is. They are an Aussie company and I think there is a distributer in Florida. Boyer Custom trucks seems to have the best prices.
