Looking at a 93 Ranger with the 4.0 in it. Truck is 4X4 ext cab A/T with 120,000 miles. Runs and rives great. A/C is nice and cold. After driving it for 20 mins I could smell antifreeze. Nothing leaking on the ground and did'n't see any leaks under the hood. On the passenger side of the fan shroud it looks cleaner then the rest of the engine and the plastic tubes down there look clean (like they were wiped off) The engne is dirty but has just those 2 cleaner spots. Where could the smell be coming from?
Is the a bypass hose like the V-8's have up on top of the motor?
The radfiator was full and the resevoir had antifreeze in it so it must be a small leak somewhere.
Any suggestions on where or what to look for??
Thanks in advance guys.
Trying to buy a Ranger cuz the gas mileage on my V-10 powered SD is killing me.
BTW.....the Ranger is priced at $2500
Usually antifreeze smell inside is from a leaky heater core. Antifreeze topped off means someone refilled it recently! Thats just the first things that come to mind.
I had something similar with my B3000. It turned out the clamp for the bottom hose on the rad was a bit loose. It was acting like a "steam leak" and I only found it because there was a white powder like substance around the edge of the hose. Put on a new clamp and all has been good.
When I bought my 1988 Ranger about 7 years ago, I was getting a strange mist or fog coming out of the A/C vents which turned out to be a minute heater core leak.
The two tubes feeding the core had cracked at the firewall and like the observation posted on this thread was producing steam in very small amounts.
There was a faint coolant smell in the cab, the carpet never became damp and there was not any visible signs of coolant near or around the core, firewall, or engine bay.
Only verified the problem after pulling the heater core and inspected the tubes.
Heater hoser are not leaking. Can see no visible leaks under the truck either. I did buy the truck and have been driving it for 3 days and the antifreese resevoir has lost some fliud. The smell is definately on the passenger side under the hood tho. The heater control hoses are not leaking nor are any of the lines. I am gonna put it up on a rack Mon and look it over closely. Only paid $2500 for the truck so I can spend some money on a leak. Thanks for the responses so far and I welcome any other thoughts on what to look for.
