OK I have an 03 Ex 6.0 with 108,000 miles. About a month ago noticed that my coolant was running low. Took it to the dealer and they told me that I needed to do have the egr replaced and quoted me $1900.00 Now I do not mind paying to have have work done, but to me that seemed high. This is the same dealer that quoted me $1100.oo to replace altenator and two batteries. I have yet to give the ok. And I know that I am living on borrowed time. What do you think about the price?
For Just an EGR Valve, I would say thats outrageous. Now if they have to replace the EGR cooler that may be a different story. Hang on some of the others will be along to verify my suspicions.
I agree with your guess Sarge. That estimate is probably for the EGR cooler, at least.
mopnup, what does their estimate show regarding replacement parts? Were they just giving you a ballpark figure? Have you noticed coolant underneath the truck or on the coolant bottle? The bottle would have white powder around the cap area if it's leaked out or been blown out there.
On a side note.... Ford did change/lower the coolant max level due to coolant puking issues. The new maximum fill level is at the Min mark on the coolant bottle. How low is your coolant?
Yes that is to replace the egr cooler. They did not quote any parts other than a few small hoses. I have not noticed any white fluid around the fill. The tank was completely empty when i checked it. Since replacing teh hose no leak at all and tank is still full. But i am noticing a lag in acceleration and spool up. Dealer warned me that if let it go that eventually it would blow the head gasket or more.
If you buy it prior to reaching 100K... No dice--he's @ 108K
LOL... (we're going in circles)
Yes, I know, and that's my whole point. Maybe he bought it already. I agree that he probably didn't, considering the dealer quote, but it seems like a good idea to find out for sure.
It'd be a bad deal if someone advised him to yank the egr cooler, only to find out during a future trip to the dealer that he voided his extended warranty.

OOOOOH! I understand and agree... Mess not with the warranty stuff IF a warranty is in place, lest ye be VOIDED!
Start reading the TECH FOLDER to better understand the EGR and what is done to fix them. You'll need to decide what your mechanical capabilities are and what you are capable of with a wrench in your hand.
Your problem sounds like egr, but it could be other things as well. Somebody with more experience will be able to better help you diagnose. Kepler is asking you the right questions to help diagnose.
What is involved in an egr delete. What are the negative consequences of taking the egr cooler out if any other than a warranty void. I have 120k on my '03 superduty with no warranty.
