My 2000 e350 has gone through 5 or 6 starters in the last 3 years. The gear hangs up after starting and you can hear it spinning away on the ring gear until you drive it for a ways. Why won't it suck the gear back in after starting and releasing the key?
Sounds like the mesh is too tight between the starter gear and the flywheel. I haven't worked on that year vehicle, so I am not familiar with how the starter mounts, so I don't know if some sort of shim in the right place would help it out. Once in awhile, the factory does make machining mistakes.
Actually the oem starter was the first one to do it. Since then I have used the Duralast gold, new starters, until this last one, which is a reman. Someone suggested to me that there is something in the wiring system that is between the starter and key, that is supposed to take cut off current once the key is released. I don't know what that would be as I haven't looked at a wiring diagram. Any other help welcomed.
You do have a solenoid that kills the current to the starter on the firewall of a newer truck. I am not sure where it is on the vans. It's really a starter relay, and then the newer starters have a true "solenoid" on the starter itself.
