I think it just depends on the front end clearance. I just pulled, painted and reinstalled my 73 thunderbird 460 with a C6 trans together, but I don't have the front end or radiator support installed. If I did I would do it separately. I did my 429 in my 75 f100 4X4 about 4 years ago and did it separately.
You can save a lot of work by pulling them together. Make sure you use an equalizer so that you can tilt the assembly as necessary to fit through the engine compartment.
It's a good idea to get yourself a transmission yoke to seal off the rear of the transmission while pulling it out.
Squido
ive done it both ways depending if i was going to swap from one engine family to another like if i was taking out a 302 and 3sp or auto and putin in a 429-c6 id takem both at the same time and drop in the new engine trans as a unit. but if i stay with the same style engine then just leave the trans in there
actually taking engine and tranny out of one and putting them into a better bodied (and titled) truck
if this is the case id pull as a unit. this way ya dont have to fool around with torque converter nuts or clutch alinment bs,you can even leave the starter on just pull the wire off the soliniod
I have always pulled the engine and tranny together when I make swaps. It is a tight fit getting them out with the core support still in place but it can be done.
I have pulled at least 100 engines and have only pulled a couple still hooked to the trans. There are a lot of opinions here, so I guess it's "whatever works for you."
one tip tho before ya do this!!! find/make a plug(old yolk works good) for the trans tailshaft if ya dont there will be trans fluid every where when ya pullem together
well the problem we ran into with the last one (although it had the t18 rather than the 435) was that the tranny wouldn't fit between the floorpan and the crossmember that the radius arms are bolted to. i ended up rolling the engine onto its side so the shift tower would clear.
Just pulled and reinstalled a 460 and C6 together in my 76 F100. Its a tight fit but with the radiator removed it went well. I think its quicker and easier that way. Do remember to seal the back of the tranny up with something to avoid a big mess. I forgot, won't do that again.
When you pull them together .... I found that a rattle can lid duct taped to the back of the tail shaft keeps the tranny fluid in. Don't go easy on the duct tape! That is if you don't have a spare yoke.
