hello-
i have a 94 bronco with the pioneer 8200 head unit(Pioneer DEH-P8200R). i've had a pair of optimus(radio shack)10's in truck boxes with a 100 watts per speaker(optimus also). i recently bought a pair of sony explodes 6'1/2(xs-e1611) for the doors. i do not have these hooked up to an amp. everything sounds somewhat ok but i'm just not very happy with the sound. i was wondering what anybody's thoughts/suggestions would be for me. i don't listen to alot of rap but i still like to have respectable bass and overall loud--clear sound. also my friend has a pair of JL 12's--they're the W(o)'s in a box for $200. just wondering what ya'll think about that. well thanks in advance for any replies.
I would go for those JL's. 200.00 is a good deal. I've had JL 10W0's in a couple of vehicles, I was fairly impressed with them. You will most likely need a bigger amp though. Also, have you thought of replacing the stock 5X7's behind the seats?
I have heard nothing but good stuff about JL audio products - I think they would be a good choice. However, I feel obligated to get up on my soapbox and preach about my personal subwoofer setup preferences.
Here goes:
Sealed boxes are the only way to go (in my opinion). The JL's can be used in a sealed or ported box, but I think it should be a crime to put a high quality speaker in a ported box, unless you want to make a lot of burpy bass to irritate your neighbors on a low budget. It takes more power to drive a sealed box, but you get a lot tighter, clearer, harder hitting bass with a lot less of the rumbly "blown speaker" sound. Also, you don't need an enclosure that consumes your passenger compartment. Sealed boxes are also easier to construct, and you are less likely to blow a speaker due to cone overextension. In short, I prefer an audio system that can beat my heart for me - not rattle my brain into a coma.
thanks alot guys. i'll talk to my friend about the Jl's. what 5x7's do ya'll suggest for the rear?also should i hook up the front sony's(and/or rear/side speakers to a multichannel amp or would that be too much of an overkill(waste of money)?
you should run a small amp to the fronts to clear up head unti distortion and a good size amp for the rear boxes. i have a 250watt amp kenwood that i keep bridged with a pioneer 10" sub and it works great. i have a kenwood head unit w/o an amp for the front but it works well for me. it might not be the lodest outside but you sit inside and every one is impressed.
thanks man
i have those sony explode 6 1/2 with max power of 160 watts. how many watts should i run to them with an amp. or should i junk them and get something that would sound Alot better?if so then what do u suggest?
thanks
chris
i would run the sonys in the back, and get yourself a component system for the front (mids, crossovers, tweeters). at minimum get yourself one amp to run your front/rear mids and highs. and a separate amp for your subs. as for the JL subs...im not a bif fan of jl but they would be better then optimus!

Are you sure those rear speakers are 5x7s? I am pretty sure they are 6x8, i know the ones on the back of my F-150 are 6x8s and i was almost positive that the rears on broncos were too.
Yup, I killed the key chime, but the headlight chime still works. It's great because before I just ignored the chime and left the lights on all the time.
I agree about the sealed box. i have two 10" ADS subs in a sealed box and get all the bass you can want in every type of music possible. They are of course powered by a 100x2 Nakamichi amp bridged and running at 2 ohms. (it puts out about 500 watts) The rears are MB Quart coax 5.5" and the fronts are 6.25" MB Quart components. They are powered by a 70x4 Nakamichi amp at 2 ohms. Its pricey but Broncos get the best sound when you do it right. I also found that the rear pockets in the cargo area are great for hiding amps so you dont disturb them with snow, feet, or whatever else gets in your Bronco.
