head gasket ?'s

alright last night i was at a friends shop showin off my 6637 filter and pete's cover well anyway he said man your coolant is a lil low and i said yea but it's straight so anyway he had some left from doin his dad's 7.3 and he filled it up.. well got out this mornin and it was back to where it was last night bfore he added to it and i've been gettin on it hard a lil latley but on the other hand i havn't noticed any "leaking" on the ground. so could this be blown head gasket? or am i over reacting.. the level is about 1 or 2 in. below the "cool full" line i was thinking about sending some oil to blackstone and see what they say but how do i go about getting enough in the lil container ( i already have the kit) would some drips off the dipstick work? anyway i would really appreciate some help Thanks!

If I fill my coolant reservoir to the cold fill line it will, it will blow coolant out of the cap when I run it hard and in a couple of days be back a couple of inches below the cold fill line. It never goes blow that, though. As long as you don't continue to loose coolant, you're all right, IMO.

Check for any green fuzz around your thermostat housing as well...it wouldnt hurt to check, and could be causing your slow loss of coolant.

Mine is the same way. It runs at an inch below the fill line no matter what I service it to or how often. I don't worry about it.

If I were going to try to recover an oil sample without pulling the drain plug I would probably get a turkey baster or small vacuum pump and draw it off the HPOP reservoir.

Yeah, i think Ford put the full line in the wrong spot. I havent really noticed it until you mentioned it, but yes all along mine's done that. I think there is some bladder hidden in the engine block that fills with the excess coolant to frustrate the owner since the 7.3 is so easy to work on..

Gravity causes this.

The reservoir being higher than the radiator's tank.

You should be able to stick a piece of the stiff tubing down your dipstick tube and just plug the end with your thumb and pull the tube out. Does the Blackstone lab kit not come with the tubing to pull a sample?

If it really bugs ya take a sharpie and mark the level on the tank and check it every now and then.
