My buddy borrowed the truck to tow his car on the trailer. He told me that he noticed it shifted funny and saw that the temp was 200+. He pulled over and let it cool down to 200, then finished the 5 minute drive home. He then hopped on the interstate and drove back to where I was and told me all this. I'm sure when he got on the interstate, it dropped back down and when I got it, the temps were 170-180. Now...1st and 2nd gear flareup after about 2k rpms and want to hold the gear to redline unless I blip it and let off, it will then shift (trans temps 150-165). Once the converter locks up all is good. I smelled the trans fluid, it only has a slight smell of non-normal, so it shouldn't be that bad.
I'm going to let it sit for a few hours and go back out because I have to drive to class.
Am I screwed and have burnt/glazed bands or do I just have deteriorated fluid and need a flush?
Thanks,
Jesse
I would say start with draining the fluid and add a quart of Lucas trans additive along with a new filter. I had a sluggish shift from 3rd to OD and drained fluid, changed filter and refilled and have had no problems since. I know I didnt get all the fluid out, but I spun the torque converter and ended up getting about 10 quarts out. Good luck
When mine trans went it was shifting like you said and the fluid didnt smell burnt either.... I know that might not be good news for you but try to pull some codes and see what you come back with. I would try the new fluid and filter first though
200 towing isn't way out of line if it's 90° out, but if it's not acting the same as it was before he borrowed it, it may have been hotter or it was just time for the TC to give up. How many miles are on it?
How does he knows it was shifty differently. does he drive the truck often to know???
at least he was looking at the gauges. I know some folks that dont care and just drive. so I dotn let many people drive my truck, cause some thing is never right when I get it back.

Exactly! I had dammage done to an old truck of mine by a very close buddy when he needed to do some yard work. Also, I let the warden borrow my PSD the other day, and wouldn't you know it, my alarm pager digital face is all messed up. I have it for a half a year, no problems, she uses it for a few hours, dammage done. Go figure. NO MORE !
Flush it out with new fluid and see where you stand.
My '01 got up to 215-220 towing real heavy up the mountains 5yrs ago. I flushed it out with fresh fluid the next day, and have kept up with every 30K since and no problems as of yet. I tow at least 4 days a week with it too.
Hopefully your tranny escapes serious trouble for your wallet and your friendship's sake.
