Hopefully it's not bad. I never let people borrow my truck, or any of the other stuff I have. I always tell them, I will haul that for you. And I also use the insurance thing, saying I have it insured where I am the only one that can drive, pull, haul, with my equipment.
He flushed the fluid and it came out a purplish color. Added a quart of the Lucas stuff and it is still doing it. He said that it seems as if 1st or 2nd gear is just holding for too long...until you let off the gas (sticking valvebody?) How would I go about checking/fixing/inspecting a vb? Which "valve" is it and how do I find it and fix it?

Who is "he"? Purplish sounds burnt, what did it smell like? I am no expert on transmissions, but I don't think you can fix the VB, but you could replace it with a JW or BTS if your trans isn't fried. To replace the VB you drop the pan and unbolt the stock one and replace with new upgraded model.
I overheated one of mine a year ago. Just changed the fluid and it is still going. It was about 230-240. The code came up overheated. The light was blinking. Still ok though.
Took it to a trans shop and the scanner tells me what I couldn't figure out...it's not late 1-2, it's skipping 2 and going to 3. So, he told me the sprag for the intermediate drum or the clutches are toast...yay...rebuild...yay. Would order a trans but the bellhousing has been welded on...yay...have to have this one rebuilt...yay...
Unless I can find a used one that someone pulled to replace with an aftermarket? Or from a wrecked vehicle?
BTW, got ahold of the ford workshop manual (badass!)...is that thing pretty dummy-proof for me to self-rebuild this trans (assuming I get the right tools?)

If you are going to tackle it yourself, do your research and get some heavy duty parts. Don't just put stock back in.
I don't know where to find those, but someone will chime in.

If you can rebuild an engine, you can rebuild an automatic. But you are right, there are some special tools needed as well as a very sanitary place to do the build. It also helps to have a workbench large enough to lay all the parts out in sequence.
Well, turns out it is most likely going to be cheaper to do this myself...no big deal, just time and money. Anyone local know the ins and outs of rebuilding these things that would care to supervise/advise to my building? I have a Ford workshop manual that has the down and dirty directions...removal and installation of the parts is no big deal...it's the inspection of the hard parts that worries me. A trained eye would be nice to have to double check.
Wouldn't be doing this until late August or September.
Thanks,
Jesse
