I have a 1991 f-150,manual trans,4.9L inline 6 engine, A super strong gas smell has been coming from the truck for a year, when I look under the truck I can see wet spots on the mid tank near the seams and at various spots on the tank, but nothing drips on the ground! They are the original tanks, the fuel pumps were replaced about 11 years ago by ford under extended warrenty. I am tempted to take the back of the truck off, drop both tanks and replace the fuel pumps, sending units, straps, and what ever. If I take the back off, I can get all the flakes of iron off the A frame that are coming off from the darn new road salt they are using, and maybe prime or undercoat the insides of the A frame railing. I need an opinion of this and the following:
New motorcraft fuel pumps are about 250 dollars each verses 175 dollars for Airtex. Are Dorman fuel tanks better than Spectra or Silla?
New motorcraft sending units are about 60 dollars each,
I already purchased motorcraft fuel lines to go from the engine to the fuel tanks. Can anyone recommend aftermarket quality manufacturers cheaper?
I have never replaced a pump . Unless it dies.. I install new tanks many times.
As for the bed if u r going to that much trouble . Getting bolts loose 3-4 guy to lift it . ETC ETC . Get Por 15 or silver bullet . Way better that paint or undercoating . But the bed is more hassle to get off than tanks they come down not up.
The straps usually r fine. So if you vendor has them in stock don't worry about them right yet . Just swap in ur old pumps if they r quite . If they die later you can rust proof again .I run nothing but used pumps. For the cost there r other things to do.
I have been getting the plastic /Ploy tanks last few time . (JC has them ) I replaced tanks 3 times on last truck . The poly should fix that.
Good luck get a good set o Line diconectors and a floor jack.
I had to replace a rusted out bed on my 89. When I pulled the bed off I found a tiny pin hole in top of side tank. I got the best prices from Rock Auto. I also put 2 coats of undercoating on the tank before I installed it. Then I panted the new sending unit to slow down the rust process on it.
Good luck!!!

Thank you for all of your ideas everyone! What is Por 15 or Silver Bullet? Is it like a paint?

yes, it is a paint that is specially made to paint over rust!! After the loose scally stuff is removed, prep the rust for the paint, and if prepped right it should stop the rust from spreading or coming back!
The fuel pump itself inside the fuel sending unit can be replaced as well, and these are available for as little as $40 on Ebay and such. Many of the high volume pumps will not fit inside the resovoir however, tried this myself.
why do you have to replace the sending unit and pump are they bad?
I have spectra tanks in two of my trucks and they are good replacement's
I say pull the bed it makes it alot easier, especially if you want to do all that other stuff
The pumps have gotten really really loud, I have a real shortage of time and money, sometimes I drive 150 miles to pick up old sears garden tractors from the 60's and 70's so I want a reliable fuel system. I ony have to get stuck once on the road to make me wish I had done the whole job. My old girlfriend got nailed for 1050 dollars just to replace the fuel pump in her chevy cavaleer when she got stalled on the side of the road in Lancaster!

That's not much over robing her at gun point......
i dont really understand why you guys think its necessary to take the bed off. We changed the tank without doing it and it wasnt that hard at all. it comes off rather easy, its just having the patients to do it.

The top of the frame can't be painted with the bed on.
But the top of frame is not where major rust problem is.
U got 2 tanks . Put new pump in one. and run old all time till it dies . Then got the new 1 to go on. Only take 3-4 hrs to swap a tank and thats with allot of coffee breaks .
There r many Manufacturers Of Por15 type stuff. It actually eats into rust and seals it . you will need to give coat of paint were sun hits it. IT can be found in most auto parts .
