Decoding VIN
just had towed to yard a '68 ford firetruck. have had no luck in finding out information using the VIN. local parts stores have no reference books and so far internet has been a zero. the VIN is N70DUD12735. it is stamped on a door plate, it is on the title and it is stamped on a plate attached to the Champion fire pump. any help in decoding the VIN would be appreciated.
have a great day!
N70 = LN-700 (Gasoline) (That is the truck model)**
D = 330ci 2V HD V8**
U = Assembled in Louisville, KY
D12735 = Serial Number (puts at around April 1968 build)
N70 and D were not on that website (it's geared toward 1967 - 1972 pickups only) however I got the information out of my 1972 Shop manual and am assuming the information is the same.
It's an N700, not a LN700.
No LN Series trucks were produced till 1970.
I've prolly decoded over 500 VIN's on FTE, and can do so for every Ford truck made between 1948 thru 2002, cars 1949 thru 1991.
Sorry, I missed yours.
Since my last post spent good bit of time with search engines and found the following link:1968 Ford VIN
It reads like poetry. Also went on Gates Rubber site:The world's most trusted name in belts, hoses & hydraulics | Gates Corporation and they have VIN Locater which printed out 1968 Ford N Series V-8 330 and gave me all the replacement hoses and belts with the exception of 5/8 id coolant hose that goes from the water pump to the block. So far haven't been able to pin that hose down. Everyone has been helpful. In futrue may make note of my ups and down with alternator that may help someone out down the road.
Thanks again

Sorry I missed your post. As soon as I can get someone to take some pictures and I figure out how to post will put them up for anyone interested to take a look. Have searched the web but so far have not been able to find any pictures that look anything like this truck.

There's no by pass hose listed in the parts catalog for the 330 M/D engine.
If I remember correctly, the by pass hose on 330 M/D engines (same for 352/360/390's) is just a straight piece of 5/8" heater hose.
Just cut it from 5/8" heater hose stock.
The 330 H/D, 361/391 engines use a special curved by-pass hose.
Ford confusion: Very few parts interchange between the 330 M/D and H/D engines.
