Hello everyone. I've been looking around to see if there was a simular problem but it hard to do when your at work. I have a 86 F150 supercab w/ a 302 and aod trans. I haven't been driving my truck as much due to a needed front end make over (8 months ago) and I do admit I have not been starting it up on a regular bases once every 2 to 3 weeks. I now have the front end done. Started my truck it did fine but I notice no auto choke the engine was calm as if it was running already. After driving it around for a while it shut off and wouldn't start up until it sat for 10 minutes then it run very rough at first then leveled out. I drove it home and shut it down then tried to restart it, after about 3 minutes it started. I checked the fuel pump (outter) change sparks, fuel filter. I have not pull a code yet but that will be done today. I now get a little higher idle from a cold start. but now like before.
It's a good idea to check the codes. I would also put some new fuel in it since it's been sitting around for awhile. If it will run good enough, try to drive it some to get the new fuel in the system.
Yeah, just pull the codes, or get them pulled. It will practically tell you the problem. Example, and I'm not meaning to offend anyone on this site... But I had an idling problem, which I described perfectly. Everyone was sure it was the IAC. "Take it out and clean it". I did, and it didn't do anything. So, I bought a new one. Didn't do anything.
Got my codes pulled, pointed to TPS sensor (code 23 I believe?), bought a new one of those and my truck has been perfect since then.
I'm just saying, hard to diagnose these smaller problems online. The codes being pulled is a must.
not tryin to thread jack but ive had some probs with my 84 starting i thought it was just the broken fuel filter but its still needs me to spary carb cleaner or quick start or gas or anything in the carb. i checked the choke but its seems to be working fine and once the car starts it runs great,, but how do i pull codes on an 84? ive been looken for code readers fro a long time for my stang as well but no luck, thankss
Sorry it tooks so long to respond back. I pulled a code, engine on motor off and the code were #21 Engine coolant temp (ect) sensor out of specified range. #31 EGR valve control sensor fault. Or below minimum voltage. My code reader is a Innova 3145 equus digital code reader for 1981-1995 F-150. The problem still continues But I notice that before I start the engine I would turn the key wait until after I here the rail fuel pump kick off then start the engine and starts after a couple of turns. The start is rough but once idle you wouldn't think the problem was there.
Up date after getting the code which indicated trouble with the temperature sensor and egr valve. I changed out the temp. sensor notice the plastic was cracked. change the TPS, removed and checked the egr valve (it was new) but the hole in the upper take that runs behind to the throttle body was blocked due to carbon build up (bad). Cleaned up while throttle body was off. Now the with everything back together the truck starts up fine I have cold start rev idle. Once at operating temp I shut it off and it started right up, several times. Now the problem, Took it out for the test drive, about a 1/4 mile she started missing every time I hit the gas, fine at idle. Did have time to run another code check or double check for disconnected vac lines (dark) but will check on these in the up coming days.
