I have a '97 3.0 shorty. Every once in a while the CEL comes on, which I turn off by disconnecting the neg. batt terminal. This has been going on for about a year. It seems to come on when the weather is very hot and the Aero has been driven for long stretch.
After I turn it off, it stays off for months sometime. The van has 97,000 on it and the plugs were changed at 87,000. The Oxy censor has never been changed. I should get the codes read but since it happens only once in a while, I thought everything is OK. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Beaned
I would start with pulling the codes, but with the 02 not being changed, you may be getting a randon code, but before you toss abunch of money at it, run the codes to see what you get.
My '91 4.0 had(has) the same issues during long drives and/or hot days. Never could pinpoint a cause, the CEL would just come on and then go off after a while and not repeat for months on end. My thought was the problem was somehow related to the vapor cannister and its purge valve.
That's why I said the 02 senser maybe the problem, my 90 with the 4.0 was putting out a randon code, it turned out the 02 was giving out a varible readings to the computer and once in awhile the reading would drop below normal range and the CEL would come on.

My in-laws live about 13 hours away and during the drive the Aero would have the CEL come on after about 6 hours of driving. (93 extended) Anything under 6 hours and there never was a CEL. Turns out it was the throttle position sensor. Replaced it and never had the light come on again.
I agree though, gets the codes read, even if you do it for free at Autozone.
I had an intermittent code with a TPS, light would come on when decelerating, or when cruising down a hill. I noticed a little more get up and go, plus better fuel economy since I replaced the TPS (I had a hard time getting the code however, it kept turning off the light before the code set, but I finally go it to do it, and turned the ignition off while the light was on, which sets the code in memory.
