Blinkers working last week during about an hour drive - then went out. Thought I head some "crackling" behind the dash. Later in the day they worked again - then not. Had the flasher / relay changed out and they seemed to be working again (the one pulled out was pretty hot to the touch). Today - no signals again. Anyone experienced this, or have any ideas? I figure its something electrical but I don't know what and would be grateful for any thoughts so the stealership doesn't get to spend too many hours trying to fix this....Thanks.
more than likely it is in the steering column if you cant find it electrically. when i had my excursion it did what you describe. then i found that the plug on the top of the steering column broke allowing the plug to slide back unplugging the wires. my friends expedition was doing the same thing as well so i pulled the plastic covers off and the plug was still together but the little tabs that actually hold the wires snapped into the wire harness plug had broke. so till we got a new plug we had to epoxy the wires in there to hold them plugged into its mating wire on the other plug half.
does that make sense? clear as mud i know but just have a look under the plastic and you will see the plug i am talking about right away.

Exactly what happened to me and my friends Xs (2001 and 2000, respectively) - symptoms, cause and cure.
yes that is the problem. the wires are extremely short and you can actually see it pulling. if you can get a little more out of them, then do it to save you hassle again later.

Changed the blinker fluid and flasher bearings and all seems to be working now....
Actually, it was the "short" wire syndrome - problem only was occuring when steering wheel was in lowest 2 "tilt" positions - when raised up the wires unpinched and were working fine. Made it hard for me to figure out what was going on, and my mechanic, because we raise the wheel up a little to drive and couldn't replicate the problem. She drove it the other day (seat all the way up, pedals extended, wheel down) and no signals, of course.
